Language Arts

Your student will greatly increase his or her language arts knowledge and skill base - typically in the context of music. Our main, overarching goal is to impart of love of both reading and writing to the students, whether developing vocabulary within a song or finding rhymes that fit a new tune, language arts come alive at the SCMA!

Mathematics

The SCMA math focus is on 'fluency' in all four math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and dividing - with integers for advanced students). If a child is fluent in these operations, then teaching the other facets of math (e.g., fractions, decimals, et. al.) become exponentially easier. The goal is to end calculator dependence for basic operations. The math skills learned at the SCMA will benefit your student for life!

Science (Occassional)

At SCMA, we love building things! We may build a suspension bridge or a tower of paper, do 'archeology' by finding toys in a hardened lump of clay or ice, or creating musical instruments - and so much more.

Art

Creativity is the name of the game. Students will learn the simple elements of art. Younger grades will focus on drawing basic shapes while the upper grades focus on my advanced elements such as textures, contrast, etc. Tools included are crayons, watercolor, scissors, glue....

Physical Education

Kids are active and should be up and moving around for a good portion of the day. Physical education at the SCMA takes many forms, from a musical 'duck-duck-goose' to hopping in time to a rhythm. On warmer days, with parental permission, we may take the students across the street to Lake Sacajawea playground (at the south end).

Homeschool Support

Do you have difficulty motivating your student to complete his or her schoolwork? We can help! Instead of a battle of wills, a tug-of-war for compliance, we allow you and your student to work together toward a common goal! We offer rewards and incentives for students who complete their weekly or semi-weekly assignments. Secondly, the SCMA is a great way to meet other parents and for your child to make great friends. It is all happening at the SCMA!
